DAY 1 (Sun) AKWAABA ANYEMI – WELCOME BROTHER / SISTER

Arrive in Accra, Ghana. Ghana is an ancestral home for the Pan-Africanism torch bearer. After check-in at your hotel, enjoy a rousing welcome. Receive an orientation from your tour operation on the pilgrimage you are about to embark upon. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

DAY 2 (Mon) CENTRAL REGION – THE DOOR OF NO RETURN AT CAPE COAST CASTLE 

After breakfast at your hotel, embark on an emotional boat trip to the Cape Coast Castle. Commemorate the departure and middle passage of Africans more than 200 years ago, when they were transported via slave ships to the Americas. Upon landing on the shores of Cape Coast, make your way to the castle where your will enter through the “Door of No Return.” That was the last door African ancestors passed through on their way to board the ships to the new world. During the slave trade, that door was a symbol of hopelessness. To modern pilgrims, it is a “Door of Return,” a symbol of hope and healing. You will explore the grounds of this infamous castle, including its slave dungeons. Every part of the castle has historical significance, as it also houses the West African Historical Museum, established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian government in 1994. Tour the museum and watch the film ‘Crossroads of People, Crossroads of Trade.’ Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

DAY 3 (Tue) MEMORIAL AT ELMINA CASTLE – EMANCIPATION VIGIL

After breakfast, prepare for a visit to the Elmina Castle. Another infamous castle and slave dungeon, Elmina was built by the Portuguese in 1482 as St. George's Castle.  This castle was the first European structure built in Sub – Saharan Africa. Explore the grounds and rooms full of haunting history. Stroll down to the beach for a memorial ceremony where each pilgrim will throw bread into the waters in remembrance of ancestors. A wreath with a candle will be solemnly pushed out to sea as a respectful moment of silence is observed in remembrance of those who died in the middle passage.

DAY 4 (Wed)                    EMANCIPATION DURBAR AT ASSIN MANSO

After breakfast, check out of your hotel for a drive through the former slave route to Assin Manso. This was the final transit point for enslaved Africans before being shipped off to the new world. You will have the opportunity to visit the slave dungeons as well as the final resting place for two ancestors whose mortal remains were returned from the USA and Jamaica and re-interred in Ghana. Enshrine your place in history by signing the Returnees Memorial Wall at the former slave river and slave market.

DAY 5 (Thu)  TAMALE

After breakfast, check out of your hotel and depart for an early morning drive from Kumasi to Tamale. En route, stop at the former slave markets of Kintampo and Assin Bono. Enjoy this scenic but haunting drive through the land where the slave trade took place. Notice the change in climate and terrain, which has a direct bearing on the population of Africans that the slave traders targeted. Upon arrival in Tamale, check-in at your hotel and relax from your long trip. Enjoy dinner and overnight at your hotel in Tamale.

DAY 6 (Fri)  RECEIVE ATONEMENT AT SALAGA

After breakfast, depart for a 2 hour drive to Salaga, home to one of the major slave markets. Meet with the traditional leader and visit the “Salaga Slave Market,” where the slave trade started in the former Gold Coast. In Salaga, you will find families whose ancestors were slave raiders, slave chains and shackles are still kept in some of the family homes. In honor of this special commemoration, village elders will perform an atonement ceremony including speeches and the symbolic slaughtering of a sheep. The leader of your group will acknowledge the atonement. The atonement will be sealed by the sharing of food and drink. Drive back to Tamale for dinner and overnight at your hotel.

DAY 7 (Sat)    TAMALE – KUMASI

After breakfast, depart for the city of Kumasi, seat of the Ashanti Empire. You will visit Manhyia Palace (the home and office of former Asante kings), the National Cultural Center and Adum (the central business district of Kumasi). The Ashanti’s have a famously regal history which dates back to 1700 and is evidenced by extraordinary relics and artifacts. Enjoy a drive through the city of Kumasi and see the many monuments dedicated to the memory of great Ashanti people. After your tour, check-in at your hotel and relax from your long trip. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Kumasi.

DAY 8(Sun)    CITY TOUR / CELEBRATION

After breakfast, depart for Accra where you will enjoy an afternoon of leisure at your hotel. In the evening attend a concert to commemorate your pilgrimage in Ghana’s Pan African city of Accra. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 9 (Mon)  DAY AT LEISURE / FAREWELL DINNER

After breakfast, spend the day leisure or doing last minute shopping. In the evening, enjoy a farewell dinner wearing your African clothes. Overnight at your hotel.

DAY 10 (Tue)  ACCRA – FAREWELL / DEPARTURE

After breakfast, prepare for your trip back home. Transfer to the airport for check-in and departure. KO NA BRA ANYEMI ("come again brother / sister")!
